our history

While gaelic football has been played in Lissycasey since the early days of the GAA, the current Lissycasey club started in 1966.

Initially there was just one team, at junior level, but as numbers increased so did the number of teams representing the club. Presently the club competes at every grade and in many we have two teams while, at adult level, there are three teams, senior, junior A and junior B.

As the club has grown so has its involvement in all aspects of GAA life. As the number of teams grew the need for facilities has grown. Our main pitch was opened in 1982 and it quickly became apparent that one pitch wasn’t sufficient to meet the needs of all of our players so this led to the development of a second pitch. Dressing rooms and a meeting room have been provided at both venues. As numbers continue to grow so does the demand for more pitches and plans are advanced to develop another playing field.

The club won its first titles in 1971 with victory in both the junior championship and league and that achievement was marked recently.

In the intervening years county titles have been won in all grades from under 12 to senior, the senior title coming to the club in 2007 when senior league honours were also won.

The club’s underage section is particularly strong and in the past decade titles have been won at every age group from under 12 through to minor including the honour of representing the county at the National Féile finals on three occasions.

The club has provided many players to a variety of county teams and this year supplied six to the minor football team, four to the under 20 team and two to the senior team.

Two members have been nominated for All-star awards with Munster and All-Ireland senior hurling medal winner Colin Lynch being honoured twice while All-star nominee Martin Daly helped Clare to the Munster senior football title in 1992. Joe Hayes was on the Irish under 17 team which toured Australia in 1999.

Lissycasey won the Clare GAA club of the year award in 1999 and the AIB club of the year award in 2002.

Scór is the GAA’s talent wing, catering for singers, musicians, quiz enthusiasts and dancers. Since Scór was launched back in 1970, Lissycasey has won numerous county titles across all categories while Munster honours have also come to the club in singing, music, recitation and set dancing. In 1994 Tara McNamara was crowned Clare, Munster and All-Ireland senior individual singing champion. In Scór na nÓg Lissycasey won the Munster and All-Ireland novelty act in 2011 and the members of this group were Orla McSweeney, Gillian Cummins, Aine McSweeney, Ava O’Malley, Kieran Moroney and Miriam Daly.

Lissycasey won the Scór na nÓg club of the year title on no less than nineteen (19) occasions while capturing the senior equivalent on five occasions.

Since its formation the club has been fortunate to have had outstanding leaders who have ensured that Lissycasey GAA is a strong vibrant club committed to providing the best of facilities for our ever-increasing membership.

The opening of the club’s new gym earlier this year highlights that commitment and the plan is to continue to upgrade facilities to cater for our ever-increasing membership.

The provision of a walking/running track around our main pitch at Lissycasey has been a huge attraction for all the community.

In recent times more and more games are being played at night time so the upgrading of our floodlights is planned at the earliest opportunity along with the development of an astro facility.

There is no doubt but that the future for the club and all of its members is very bright.
